Have you ever worried about identity theft? Well, you should be. It is a pernicious problem of our age and it is growing more common everyday. Many people who have been victims of identity theft have had strangers drain their savings accounts and destroyed their credit reputations. Some people have even lost their homes or acquired an embarrassing record of arrest and imprisonment. Identity fraudsters have stolen over $50 billion from American consumers and business in 2006 alone.

You need to be worried. You would be foolish not to be worried. And you need to take steps to prevent yourself from becoming a victim of identity theft and the fraud that can follow it.

Identity thieves are usually after your social security number, so you have to take special care about giving it out, leaving it publicly visible, or writing it down on something that can be lost and seen by someone else. You should also avoid carrying your social security card with you, perhaps in your bag or wallet, as you run the risk of losing it if your things are lost or stolen, whereupon your card may fall into the wrong hands.

One thing that fraudsters may do is eavesdrop on conversations where you need to tell someone else your social security number for valid reasons. So be cautious whenever you are involved in such sensitive transactions. Note if there are unauthorized persons hanging about where they shouldn’t. If you see that kind of suspicious character, you can request that you have the sensitive conversation in a more private area.

You should also be careful when disposing of all sorts of sensitive personal documents in your trash. I’m talking about the records of your bank accounts, credit cards, insurance, pension, and employment. These all contain important data, like your social security number, that cannot be allowed to fall into the wrong hands. Many identity thieves perform dumpster diving, or the rummaging through other people’s waste baskets to find exactly such sensitive documents. To guard against dumpster diving, you should shred your documents before you dispose of them in the trash.

It is also important to keep your computer secure. Spam or fraudulent emails, spyware, and phishing web sites are all ways by which some hacker can steal your identity. Be sure to install a good firewall program and have a reputable spyware blocker and spam filter. Never log into sensitive online accounts like the one for your bank when you are using a public computer terminal.
